It doesn't even smoke - a soliloquy on art blockSo, my Inspiration went to buy cigarettes.I knew what was going on, since my Inspiration doesn't smoke, so, when it didn't come back as I expected, I decided to send my Will to Draw looking for it in order to bring it back to me.It turned out to be a bad idea, since I never saw either of them again. It's about a month now.No need to mention how much I could use their help right now. I tried to do things without them, but it didn't really work out... Of course I can still draw, it's not like one can lose the ability to do something when head traumas are not involved. Problem is, I'd rather wash dishes or spend the whole morning on the couch with my dog as a blanket than draw.I know what people like to say in this cases... "It's not art block, it's just you being lazy"Yeah right, I'm so lazy I'd rather clean the whole house or stare the wall the whole day than do what I love the most. You're a genius, my problem is solved now, thanks."Then keep drawing an
Spirit Day 2012"Ultimately, I want Spirit Day to make just one person feel little bit better about his or herself, to feel safe enough in their own skin and to be proud of who they are" - Brittany McMillanIn memory of the young LGBT people who lost their lives to suicide, Brittany encouraged her friends to wear purple on a day in October -- a day that came to be known as Spirit Day. Since then, GLAAD has helped turn Spirit Day into a global event that inspires millions of individuals, celebrities, TV personalities, media outlets, companies and schools to wear purple in a stand against bullying. While Spirit Day does focus on the LGBT community, I believe that it's anti-bullying message is relevant to every community. It only get's better, if we take the pledge to make it so. Practice compassion and understanding, and treat others how you would like to be treated and we can make a difference. Miscellaneous vs OtherOver the past few months, we've been diligently working on cleaning up the category tree of old and unused categories. While most of this will go unnoticed by the community, what you will notice is the change from "Miscellaneous" galleries to "Other". The reason for this change is simple. The concept of Miscellaneous leads one to believe that it's a junk drawer category for everything under the sun when the intention was to be an "Other" category for deviations that don't fit well in other sub-categories of the tree. We're also working on u

To Be a Mother I do not believe, as is common, that age brings with it wisdom; my mother (and consequently, myself) are bright examples of how time does not cure the tendency to make irrational decisions. When I was a small child, I saw my mother as the brightest star in the evening sky; she was my light, my direction, my goddess. Any mistakes or unintelligent decisions she made were, in my mind, exempt from ridicule; being my mother, she was, of course, the epitome of perfection. Drawing closed the blinds of my childhood, I grew into the realization that my mother, as all others, was a flawed creature; her brilliant red hair came from a plastic bottle from the second aisle of the supermarket, and correspondingly, so did her self-worth. As I aged, it was forced upon me the degree to which she placed value in appearance; no test score could bring joy into her eyes the way it did when I placed aside twenty e

on dissatisfactionI had a conversation the other day with one of my watchers about the point at which "you feel like an artist". she asked me when that point is, or when the signs of it show.honestly, thinking some more about our conversation, I can't say there's ever a line you cross, or like a sign you pass that says "congrats, you are now entering the state of Artist". there is no finish line. it starts when you say to yourself seriously "hey, I wanna do that," and it lasts as long as you feel that way. it might surprise, but a lot of 'established' artists will say the same thing (I've asked some) and the only difference is they take the work in their stride, or take it more seriously because it's their job, and by then the word has lost some of its 'magic'. but some of those have said to me as well that no, there is no point at which you feel "like an artist", but there's only a point at which you feel comfortable being called one. and that can come pretty quickly if you set out to ma
it takes 'balls' to make art.this is something I just wanna share with my watchers and followers, it's about the morale of artists - any artist, whether they draw, write, act - anything. creative people in general.it seems a lot of people out there don't think it takes some kind of courage to post your work online for the world to see, but I reckon it does - because I see a lot of artists, especially young or beginner artists just starting out becoming demoralized quickly by the kind of comments they get about their art or their stories. for some, it *seems* all they get is a constant stream of criticism, well-meaning or not - "your anatomy needs work" or "_____ part bothers me but the rest is ok" kinda thing~ things that read like negative throwaway comments much of the time. I've been an artist nearly ten years so I've developed a thick skin, but it's easy to ruin the confidence of a learner with a stream of nitpicks. so if any of us are commenting on others' works, it's best to say something positive about the

I got this one: "slimy eel. it works as a librarian in hell. there are scorpions everywhere."Also, if you DRAW your animal, I will add it here!

Commissioners/ commissioned: tips about good behavCommissioners/ commissioned: tips about good behaviour and good practice I will start by saying this has absolutely no aim to be set in stone rules, it is more a compilation of various opinions and feedbacks, along with my own. I would like to extend first thanks to my friends that have helped me set this down and gave me their very valuable inputs and opinions. I do hope this will be of some help for as much people as possible. This is still a WIP, I welcome all discussions and feedback about it. Last and not least, if you want to use this, feel free to do it but please refer to me, thanks.Finding "the" artistWhen you stumble open an artist whose style you love and you wish to commission, first step as obvious as it may seem is to check if he is doing commissions and the feedback on those.Check carefully their galleries, profile and journal about the commission's information, previous commissioners' feedback, etc.Sometimes artists don't offer the same quality on com
